Rosé wines are something you drink first with your eyes, and then with your taste buds. Italian rosati present visual variations ranging from palest pink to deepest raspberry red.  The variety of colors is matched only by the variety of styles:  light, crisp, and refreshing in one region; full bodied and silky smooth in another….and, August is the perfect time to enjoy rosati.  There is just something about summer food that calls for a glass of something cool and pink, making rosati an ideal addition to any summer garden fest.

Please join Nora Berwick in the garden of John and Caprial Pence as we sample a selection of Italian Rosati paired to complement the savory flavors of these James Beard Superstar Chefs’ cuisine specifically selected for this event.  Our evening begins with a sparkling unusually elegant Prosecco -- Alice Ose Vino Spumante Rosé, “Osé”, Veneto produced from 100% Marzemino grapes, as we gather around the Pence’s garden kitchen.  We then move to the smooth yet markedly acidic 2012 Monchiero, Langhe Rosato, “Vignola”, Piemonte that will be coupled with Pizza Bianco/Monchiero, and a delectably light Corn Bisque with Arugula Pesto/Puenta Crena.  The intense deep ruby red with violet reflections and notes of white pepper unfolding to aromas of sweet plum jam and earthy spice of the 2010 Scarbolo, Pinot Grigio Ramato, “XL”, Venezia Giulia provides the backdrop for our second course delight of Fregola with Clams, Oven Roasted Cherry Tomatoes, Basil and Bread Crumbs/Provenza.  We then move on to our third course of Grilled Tri Tip with Roasted Shallots, Pancetta and Red Wine/Scabolo that will be accompanied with a tasting of the 2011 Punta Crena, Colline Savonesi IGT, “Barbarosa”, Liguria, the only Barbarossa produced in Italy (although a distinct grape variety grown in Emilia-Romagna coincidentally has the same name), and, the 2012 Provenza, Chiaretto Classico Della Garda, Veneto, prized among the diverse Italian rosati for its fragrance and its delicate perfume.  Although the Garda Chiaretto is declared in literature as a “one night wine” from the moment in which the vinification of the four Gardesana grapes related to the D.O.P. Garda Classic - Groppello, Marzemino, Sangiovese and Barbera, occurs with a brief contact between the must and the skins lasting only one night, it has in reserve, a body which gives it a life of several years.  Our evening concludes with the 2012 Elio Perrone, Mosto d’Uva Paraziamente Fermentato Rose, “Bigaro”, Piemonte, an innovative blend of equal parts Brachetto and Moscato.  This wonderfully intense, yet slightly sweet and ‘bubbly light’ blend with notes of ripe raspberry and peaches accompanies the final course of Panna Cotta with Caramelized Honey, Grilled Peaches and Sugar Honeycomb/Perrone.

Please bring your own sparkling wine flutes.
