The 1998 Pinot Noir harvest was clearly the finest vintage of the 90's for Oregon.   The best wines from 1998 have it all: deep, fresh colors; sappy, complex aromatics; concentration and depth of flavor; solid supporting acidity and ripe, even tannins and length on the palate. Mother Nature did the crop-thinning that many producers were unwilling to do for themselves. The 1998 growing season had a cold, rainy spring resulting in a poor fruit set, with small clusters and small grapes.

From the outset, 1998 Oregon crop levels were typically down 30% to 50% from the norm, setting the stage for early and complete ripening and concentrated wines. August and September were warm, and the grape skins reached thorough ripeness in most vines, and harvest conditions were mostly dry. Sugar levels were average to above average, and acidities were generally adequate to good. The wines have plenty of tannic support, and the tannins tend to be round and well-integrated. The harvest was generally a few days earlier than average-and conditions were mostly dry.

The results were superb 1998 Oregon Pinots that have proven themselves time and again as some of the most enjoyable Oregon pinots ever, a benchmark/watershed vintage for pinot lovers.  We have the pleasure to sample some of the finest special cuvees, single vineyard, and reserve bottlings from some of 1998’s most renowned properties in Oregon matched with a superb menu from Gourmet Productions.
